How to Choose a Basketball Academy in South East Melbourne: 10 Questions to Ask

Parents almost never ask me hard questions before signing up. They ask about price and time, and that is about it. I would rather you interrogated me, because the answers separate a real development program from an hour of supervised basketball. Here are the ten I would ask if I were paying.

1. How many kids per coach?

This is the first one for a reason. Thirty kids and one coach means your child is standing in a line most of the session. Ask for the number, not a description. Anything where every kid gets corrected multiple times in an hour is fine. Anything where the coach cannot physically get to them is not.

2. Are groups split by age and ability?

A nine-year-old beginner in the same drill as a fourteen-year-old rep player is bad for both of them. One gets steamrolled, the other gets bored. Good programs split properly even when it is a hassle to run.

3. What will my child actually work on?

You should get a straight answer: ball handling blocks, shooting mechanics, finishing, footwork, defence, then game play with coaching inside it. If the answer is vague or the session is mostly scrimmage, you are paying for supervision. Kids love scrimmage. Scrimmage on its own does not build skills.

4. Does the program build week to week?

Ask what week six looks like compared to week one. If they are the same session with different drills, there is no plan. Development is repetition with progression, not variety for its own sake.

5. Who is coaching, and what have they done?

Playing experience is not everything, but it matters. A coach who has competed at a high level knows what the next level demands, and kids listen differently to someone who has lived it. Ask directly. Anyone worth training with will answer happily.

6. Do all coaches hold Working With Children Checks?

There is one correct answer and it is yes, without hesitation. Ask it every time, of everyone.

7. How do you assess my child?

A good program tells you what your kid is bad at. Politely, but specifically. If nobody can name your child’s two biggest weaknesses after a few sessions, they are not being watched closely enough.

8. What happens if my child is well ahead, or well behind?

Both are normal and both need an answer. Advanced players need to be pushed by better opposition. Beginners need extra time on fundamentals without being embarrassed. Programs that treat everyone identically fail one end or the other.

9. Where does this lead?

Ask about the pathway. Does the program support a kid from beginner to domestic to rep and beyond, or does it stop? If your child improves fast, you do not want to be shopping again in twelve months. Understanding how the local pathway fits together helps here — domestic and rep basketball are explained in this guide.

10. Can I see the results?

Not marketing claims. Actual players, actual improvement, parents who will talk to you. Any coach with a track record can point you at both.

Two Red Flags

  • Guarantees. Nobody can promise a rep spot or a scholarship. Anyone who does is selling something.

  • No assessment. If a program takes your money without ever watching your child play, the training cannot be tailored to them, whatever the website says.

One Thing Price Will Not Tell You

Rates around Melbourne swing wildly and they correlate poorly with quality. I have covered what private training actually costs separately. Judge the hour, not the invoice.

How We Answer These

Capped numbers so every player gets coached. Groups split by age and ability. A curriculum that builds across a term. Working With Children Checks across the board. An honest assessment in the first session and a plan that follows from it. You can see the weekly Academy program, the Elite pathway and our school holiday camps for how that works in practice, or read the full guide to training options in South East Melbourne.
