At some point, most basketball parents ask the same question: would private training actually make a difference, or is it an expensive extra? The honest answer is that it depends entirely on the trainer, the player and the timing. Here is a straight guide to what private basketball training costs in Melbourne, what you should get for the money, and when it is - and is not - worth it.
What Private Basketball Training Costs in Melbourne
Across Melbourne, private 1-on-1 basketball sessions range from roughly $30 an hour at the casual end to $175 or more for high-end programs. Small-group sessions (two to four players) typically cost $40-$70 per player. Price alone tells you very little: some expensive sessions are generic workouts, and some mid-priced coaches deliver exceptional value. What matters is what happens inside the hour.
What You Should Actually Get for Your Money
An honest assessment. A good trainer starts by identifying specific weaknesses - weak-hand handling, shooting mechanics, footwork - not by running a generic session.
A plan that builds. Each session should follow from the last. If week five looks identical to week one, you are paying for supervision, not coaching.
Constant, specific feedback. The whole point of 1-on-1 is corrections your child cannot get in a team of ten. Elbow position, footwork on the catch, reading the defender - detail is what you are buying.
Measurable progress. You should be able to see the difference in games within four to six weeks.
When Private Training Is Worth It
Private training delivers the most value when a player has hit a plateau in team training, is preparing for rep tryouts, has a specific weakness holding everything else back, or needs confidence built through mastery. The ages of 10 to 12 are a particularly powerful window - players are strong enough to learn correct technique but young enough that bad habits have not cemented.
When It Is Not the Right Spend
If your child is brand new to basketball, a good group program or holiday camp usually delivers more value per dollar - beginners improve fast in any structured environment, and playing alongside peers keeps it fun. And if the motivation is coming from the parent rather than the player, group training is a better test of genuine interest before investing in 1-on-1 work.
The Middle Ground: Small-Group Training
Groups of two to four players get most of the individual attention of private coaching at a lower cost per player - with a bonus 1-on-1 training cannot offer: live defenders. New moves only become game skills when practised against real opposition, which is why our small-group sessions lean heavily on 2v2 and 3v3 play.
What We Charge at MYP Academy
We keep it simple: private 1-on-1 sessions are $100, with small-group options that bring the per-player cost down. Every program starts with an assessment, follows a plan, and is delivered by a coach who has competed at professional level across South East Melbourne basketball.
If your child is ready for training with genuine individual attention, we would love to help.
