School Holiday Basketball Camps in South East Melbourne: What Parents Should Look For

Updated: Aug 4

Every school holidays, South East Melbourne parents face the same question: how do you keep the kids active, off screens and actually learning something? Basketball camps have become one of the most popular answers - but the quality gap between camps is enormous. Some are structured development programs; others are little more than supervised shootarounds. Here is how to tell the difference before you book.

Why Holiday Camps Accelerate Development

A well-run camp compresses weeks of development into days. Instead of one training session a week, players get consecutive days of repetition, which is exactly how new skills stick. Camps also put kids alongside unfamiliar players, which builds the confidence and adaptability that team training alone cannot. For many players, the biggest jumps in their season happen in the holidays, not during the term.

What Separates a Quality Camp From Child-Minding

  • A structured curriculum. Ask what players will actually work on each day. A quality camp can tell you: ball handling blocks, shooting mechanics, finishing, defensive footwork, and game play with coaching in it - not just endless scrimmage.

  • Grouping by age and ability. A 6-year-old beginner and a 14-year-old rep player should not be in the same drill. Look for camps that split groups properly, such as ages 5-10 and 11-16.

  • Coach-to-player ratio. More coaches means more corrections per child. If one coach is managing thirty kids, your child is mostly waiting in lines.

  • Qualified, screened coaches. Working With Children Checks are non-negotiable. Coaching experience at a decent level of basketball is a strong bonus - players listen differently to coaches who have lived it.

  • Balance of skills and fun. Kids should finish tired and smiling. The best camps hide serious skill work inside competitions, challenges and games.

What is the daily schedule? How are groups divided? Who are the coaches and what is their background? What happens if my child is a complete beginner - or well above average? Is there a plan for hot days, water breaks and injuries? A camp that answers these quickly and specifically is a camp that has thought about them.
